Design Challenge

Through preliminary research it was found that International graduate students face more problems while balancing their work and part time jobs. The purpose of this project is to provide simplify the part time job hunting process to improve acess to desired jobs

Solution Overview

IU Job website which houses all the jobs available for  students in one location. It allows users to select their areas of interest based on which they are provided a possible career path and jobs that will support their career path. They are also provided flexibility to switch career paths midway if they feel the one they chose is not working great for them.

Research

Target audience

Name

We narrowed down the target audience to International students of Indiana University Bloomington. They could either be students who are already working as part time employees and looking for a switch or students who are looking for a new on campus job/jobs. For the scope of the project we focused only on on-campus job hunting and for International Graduate Students only.

Assumptions

Name

01. A lack of publicly accessible transportation

05. Disconnect (information mismatch) between applicants and employers.

02. Student loan costs include much more than the cost of attendance eg. living expenses during their college years.

06. Part-time work can have a negative impact on academic performance.

03. International graduate students struggle with finding the right on-campus jobs.

07. Balancing work with academics is challenging.

04. Existing on-campus job search resources are falling short.

User Research

Name

To validate/negate our predispositions we conducted user research using the Interviews method. We recruited participants who were international graduate students and working part-time on campus for Zoom interviews, telephonic interviews and also in-person interviews. The insights from the interviews are presented in the diagram above.

Insights

Name

The team conducted affinity diagramming on the data collected from the interviews to analyse patterns. User quotes were noted down on sticky notes and categories on a lower level based on the patterns found. After forming smaller categories the categories were grouped into higher level overarching themes.

Name

From the data the main themes identified were Motivation, Job Search, Ideal Job and Finance and Time management. These were the areas of concern that the users struggled with. These insights fed into the conceptualisation process.

Ideation

01. How might we ease the job screening process for employers and help them find better pool of candidates?

02. How might we help students to apply to interesting jobs and never miss out on any opportunity?

03. How might we help students align their part-time jobs with their career paths?

04. How might we help students align their part-time jobs with their career paths?

User Testing

The UI was tested with a 4 International students to understand the findability of the career path feature, and overall satisfaction with the representation of the information.

• Users didn't understand how they could track their career path if they decided to take a detour from it.

• Concerns were raised about what will the next steps be if they didn't get the jobs they wished to apply for
